It took at least two DIY basil plants from Trader Joe's to die before I realized a few simple tricks to follow to keeping plants looking healthy and delicious. First thing to do when bringing home an herb pot is to re-plant it in a larger container, and usually you will have to buy this AND potting soil. Second, keep a full watering can around so that you can water your plants frequently.
A last trick I learned is to not be afraid to be overzealous with picking leaves from your plants - the trimming actually helps stimulate growth, and the more you eat from them, the more they'll want to grow. I foresee much pesto in the near future...
